Cinnamon alleviates primary dysmenorrhea

Researchers from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran suggest that cinnamon can help relieve dysmenorrhea. They conducted a randomized, double-blind clinical trial to determine the effect of cinnamon on dysmenorrhea.

  • In the study, which was published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, the researchers gave participants either 1,000 milligrams (mg) of cinnamon capsules or placebo┬ácapsules containing 1,000 mg starch in the first three days of menstruation for two cycles continuously.
  • Primary dysmenorrhea is a cyclic cramping pain in the lower abdomen that occurs just before or during menstruation.
  • Primary dysmenorrhea can interfere with everyday activity.
  • Based on the results, the mean intensity of dysmenorrhea dramatically decreased over time in both groups.
  • However, the intensity reduction is much more significant in the cinnamon group compared to the placebo group.

In conclusion, cinnamon may be used to relieve dysmenorrhea as it can decrease the intensity of the condition.
